This week, on April 22, it’s been 400 years of the death of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and the world’s pre-eminent novelist due to his major work: Don Quixote of La Mancha.

On the occasion of this anniversary and the celebration of the International Book Day on 23 April, the chefs of Cueva La Martina have created a special menu in honour of Cervantes that includes much of the essence of La Mancha gastronomy. A cuisine which is internationally known thanks to Don Quixote and that could be defined as simple and of shepherd’s origin, but that still is delicious and leaves freedom to the imagination and interpretation of each chef.

As starters we’ll serve Pisto Manchego (made of tomatoes, onions, egglant, green and red peppers and olive oil) and Migas de Pastores (originally made of leftover bread or tortas, today a fashionable first course served in the best restaurants) with bacon, peppers and grapes. As main dish, we have chosen a delicious Caldereta a la Pastora (lamb stew shepherd’s style) and for dessert we will delight you with a Bizcochada Manchego (La Mancha style sponge cake). All served with water, bread and wine from the denomination of origin La Mancha.
